Roulette is the most honest game in the casino: fixed odds, published payouts, zero hidden mechanics. It’s also the game where players most often pay double the house edge for no reason — by sitting at the wrong wheel. Here’s everything that matters.
The only decision that matters: pick your wheel
- European roulette — 37 pockets (numbers 1–36 plus a single zero). House edge: 2.70% on every standard bet.
- American roulette — 38 pockets (adds a double zero). Same payouts, one more way to lose. House edge: 5.26% — nearly double, for an identical-looking game.
- French roulette — European wheel with la partage or en prison rules: even-money bets lose only half (or get a second chance) when zero hits. Edge on those bets drops to 1.35% — the best roulette deal anywhere.
The zero is the entire business model: red/black pays 1:1 as if it were 50/50, but 18/37 isn’t 50% — the gap is the edge. Every added zero widens it. If a casino only offers American roulette, it’s telling you what it thinks of you.
Bets and payouts (same on every wheel)
- Even-money (red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36): pays 1:1, the lowest-variance way to play.
- Dozens/columns: pays 2:1, covers 12 numbers.
- Single number (straight up): pays 35:1, hits 1-in-37 (European). Maximum drama, same edge.
- Splits, streets, corners: everything in between — payout always scales inversely with coverage, edge stays constant.
One American-only trap: the “basket” bet (0-00-1-2-3) carries a 7.9% edge — the worst standard bet on any roulette layout.
Systems: an honest obituary
Martingale, Fibonacci, D’Alembert, Labouchère — roulette has attracted more betting systems than every other game combined, and they all fail the same way: they resize bets without changing probabilities.
