HiLo is the simplest card game in the crypto casino: a card is shown, you guess whether the next is higher or lower, and each correct guess builds your multiplier until you cash out or bust. Under the minimalism hides a neat piece of math that most players never compute — and it’s the difference between playing HiLo and donating to it.
The rules in thirty seconds
A card is dealt face-up. You bet the next card will be higher or lower (rules on ties and aces vary slightly by site — check whether ace is high, low, or both). Guess right and your multiplier grows; guess wrong and you lose the stake. Most versions let you skip a bad card (a 7 or 8, where both directions are coin flips) and cash out after any correct guess.
The probabilities that should drive your decisions
Every guess has a computable win chance based on the shown card and remaining deck. Rough numbers (fresh 52-card deck, ace high):
- Shown 2, betting higher: ~92% — the best guess in the game, and it pays accordingly little.
- Shown King, betting lower: ~92% — same deal mirrored.
- Shown 7 or 8: roughly 50/50 either way — skip these; there’s no edge to chase and the payout doesn’t reward the risk.
- Shown Queen, betting lower: ~85% — strong but not free; one bust erases several wins.
The multiplier offered for each guess equals the inverse of the true probability, minus the house edge (~1–3% at honest implementations). Same architecture as Limbo and dice: every choice is the same expected value in a different outfit.
The two strategic levers that actually exist
- Skip discipline. Skips are the only free option in HiLo — use them on every middle card. Players who “play through” 7s and 8s are paying variance for zero extra EV.
- Cash-out pre-commitment. The multiplier curve seduces you into streaks. Set the exit before the round (“out at 2x” or “three guesses, then bank”) and the game becomes a controlled, low-edge grind. Play it by feel and it becomes the fastest bankroll drain in the originals lobby.
Counting cards in HiLo?
Technically the deck depletes, so tracking seen cards slightly refines probabilities — but crypto HiLo almost always reshuffles every round (or every guess), making counting dead. If the game info doesn’t state the reshuffle policy, assume continuous shuffle. Anyone selling a HiLo counting system is selling a myth.
Fairness and where to play
Card sequence in verifiable HiLo derives from the standard seed trio — server seed, client seed, nonce — so the full shoe can be recomputed after the round.
