“Our games are fair” is a claim. Certified RNG and provably fair are the two mechanisms that turn that claim into something checkable — but they work in opposite directions, and knowing the difference tells you exactly how much trust each one actually removes.
Certified RNG: trust, audited
Traditional online casinos (and the big slot providers) run server-side Random Number Generators certified by testing labs — eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI and similar. The lab audits the code, verifies the output distribution over billions of simulated rounds, and issues a certificate. What this model gives you:
- Statistical assurance — the RNG produces the advertised distribution over the long run.
- Regulatory teeth — certified games operate under licenses that can be revoked.
What it doesn’t give you: any way to check your rounds. You trust the lab, the lab trusts the audit, and the audit happened some time ago. Between you and the machine sits an unbroken chain of institutional trust — usually deserved, occasionally not.
Provably fair: trust, replaced by math
Crypto casinos inverted the model. Before a round, the server commits to a secret seed by showing you its hash. You provide (or can rotate) your own client seed. The round’s outcome is a deterministic function of server seed + client seed + round number. After the round, the server reveals its seed, and you can recompute everything yourself: if the revealed seed matches the hash shown earlier and recomputing produces your actual result, the outcome was locked in before you bet and couldn’t have been adjusted to your wager. What this gives you: per-round, personal, cryptographic proof — no institution required. What it doesn’t give you: proof that the distribution is honest across all rounds (you verify rounds, not the generator), and absolutely nothing about whether the site will pay your withdrawal. Provably fair covers the game, not the cashier.
The honest comparison
- Certified RNG: strong on distribution and regulation, zero personal verifiability.
- Provably fair: strong on per-round integrity and personal verifiability, silent on solvency and long-run distribution.
They’re complements, not competitors — which is why the strongest signal a site can send is offering both: licensed, audited providers for slots and live games, and seed-verifiable originals. One label alone, especially self-awarded, proves nothing.
Verify it yourself — the three-minute habit
- On any originals game (dice, crash, limbo, plinko, coinflip), find the fairness tab and copy the server seed hash before betting.
- Play a few rounds, then reveal/rotate the seed.
- Paste server seed, client seed and nonce into our Provably Fair Verifier and confirm it reproduces your results.
If the numbers match, that game — at least — was honest with you. If a site makes this process impossible, no certificate on its footer will save it. Fairness you can check beats fairness you’re asked to believe, every single time.
