You and the dealer each get cards; your goal is a higher total than the dealer without passing 21. Face cards count 10, aces 1 or 11. Basic strategy is a lookup table — your hand versus the dealer’s up-card — derived from full probability calculation, not vibes. The decisions that carry most of the value:
- Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives.
- Double 11 against everything except an ace (in most rule sets). Double 10 against 2–9.
- Stand on hard 17+. Hit hard 12–16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher — yes, hitting 16 feels terrible; the math doesn’t care.
- Never take insurance. It’s a side bet with a ~7% house edge dressed as protection.
